Zoning Permits
Before you can obtain a liquor license you must first acquire the proper zoning permits that are required by your city, or county, government for the privilege of selling alcoholic beverages on the actual property you want. Typically the zoning permits that you will need to get are called Conditional Use Permits or “CUP”.

Keep in mind that a zoning permit and liquor license are two very different things but you need both to operate. A liquor license will allow your business to store and sell alcoholic beverages and a zoning permit allows the land to be used and generally stays with the property after a business changes ownership.

There are a few steps you must take in order to get a zoning permit. You must first determine if the area you plan on opening in is an incorporated city or unincorporated county area. Then you must contact the zoning department of your locale and speak with a planner about the address of your business location and then based upon the liquor license you will require they will tell you if you need a zoning permit for that location.

If a zoning permit is required for a location you will need to file a zoning application with the city or county. You will have to provide maps of the building and may even have to notify the local residents of your application. There may be specific things that you will have to do based upon your location and your local zoning office will have what you will need.
