Liquor License Zoning Permit in California

Opening a business requires multiple steps and one of those includes Zoning permits. While we have talked about the importance of obtaining a liquor license, you must keep in mind other requirements that need to be met such as obtaining zoning permits. Often, these permits are called Conditional Use Permits, or “CUP”.

  • There are a few steps you must follow while acquiring zoning permits. Steps include:

  1. Determining whether the area of your business is considered to be an incorporated city or unincorporated county area.
  2. Contact the zoning department of your locale to speak with a planner regarding the address of your business location.
  3. Come to a conclusion on whether or not you need a zoning permit for that location based on the liquor licenses that are required for your business.
  • If it is determined that your business needs a liquor license zoning permit, you will have to do the following:

  1. File a Zoning application with the city or county.
  2. Provide maps of the building.
  3. Possibly have to notify local residents of your application.
  4. Contact your local zoning office to determine if there are further things you will have to do specifically based upon your location.

Having a zoning permit when it is required is necessary in order to open a business. A zoning permit along with a liquor license is needed to operate.
