Liquor Licenses for a Restaurant

If your business plans on selling any type of alcohol, whether that be liquor, wine, or beer, you must apply for a liquor license for a store through the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). Liquor licenses for a restaurant is not a “one size fits all”. There are many different types of liquor licenses that are required in the state of California. Your restaurant can acquire one of these licenses depending on your business plans. In this article we will review the different types of liquor licenses for restaurants and other type of businesses that plan on operating on an on- sale liquor license.
A restaurant will require an on-sale liquor license for onsite consumption. On-sale licenses are broken down to two main groups; beer and wine (Type 41 and Type 42), or full on-sale general liquor (Type 47 and Type 48). How do you know which type is needed for your business? That depends on the type of business you plan on running. If your business will include food service, such as a full service restaurant, then Type 41’s and type 47’s are the type of on-sale liquor license required for your business. With this type, you will be required to have a kitchen and all age groups are welcomed to be on the premises. On the other hand, if your business does not intend on offering food service, such as bars or taverns, then Type 42’s and Type 48’s are the type of on-sale liquor license for you. With these types, only ages 21 and up are allowed on premise.
